  1. So far this school year I have focused on allowing for appropriate wait time with my ELL students. I would like to incorporate more sentence frames and conversation starters into my lessons as well as visuals in my classroom.

  2. I offer opportunities for my students to engage in conversations in all my lessons. I have also incorporated more writing into my lessons this year, but I would like to do more with writing.

  3. I have looked for the language focus in lesson plans and in walk throughs in classrooms.

  4. I provide sentence frames when I notice lulls in conversations and answers. We practice using root words to identify the meanings of new words. We utilize the think-pair-share method often.

  5. My number one goal in my classroom is to teach students the "language of mathematics", so I have worked to help students understand the precise meaning of everyday words in a math classroom--for example, getting ELs to understand that "increased" means addition. Mr. Guttierrez has been instrumental in helping the students learn to translate not only from Spanish to English but also from English to math. We have a long way to go, but we are slowly making progress.

  6. I see teachers using more pictorial representations to emphasize language concepts.

  7. I want to think more in terms of specific language goals for students and having our teachers conference with their students about these goals. For example, when I write short answer responses, my goal is to write in complete sentences and stretch my sentence with details.

  9. I have created a routine of moving from graphic organizers to sentence frames so that my students can better process the material. I would like to incorporate more conversational starters to better guide the conversation that my students are having.

  10. I've included technology as another platform for my students to use language. One technology tool I have used with my students is Flipgrid. This allows my students to respond orally independently or in groups. Students who need a little more time can view other students' responses before recording their own.

  11. So far this year my students have engaged in meaningful conversations through their daily work with one another. I would like to incorporate more sentence frames in my daily lessons.

  12. I have tried to develop a routine where the students have an opportunity to learn vocabulary words, talk about phrases, and idioms that might be hard to understand while we are reading the story in order to make predictions and draw conclusions. We also use sentences frames and graphic organizers for writing.

  13. In the ESL classroom my focus is on language growth. I think I do a good job with language objectives and leveled vocabulary. I use language frames to help students speak and write. I struggle with getting students to practice their speaking and using academic language. I struggle with knowing what scaffolds would be best to help them get to the next level.

  14. I have incorporated quizlet a lot in helping my students learn their science terms. I have also had them look at the standards and try to rewrite them into language they would understand.

  15. I have focused more on academic vocabulary, getting it up on a word wall , as as well as repetitious use of vocabulary.

  16. I have used language in the four domains of speaking, listening, reading, and writing. We focus on each of these during class time, in varying degrees. I'm also using the ESL RIGOR curriculum and computer program Imagine Learning to aid in the development of student language.

  17. I am having my students share with each other, focus on vocabulary, and really increase their writing. What I would like to do more of is spend more time with numberless story problems. Have the students discuss what the math questions are asking.

  18. I have dedicated more time for student collaboration especially with content vocabulary and vocabulary from texts we are reading. I think by writing the key vocabulary in our lesson plans it helps us to focus more on students' understanding of these words. I have had success with sentence frames and reviewing and building on the vocabulary from one lesson to the next.
