SIOP Day 2 Building Background

Building Background: • How am I teaching key vocabulary? • Would you like to try a vocabulary teaching approach from SIOP? • Have you tried/would you like to try Dr. Margarita Calderon’s 3 Tiers of vocabulary? • Are you using cognates? • Have you tried/would you like to try teaching the text backwards?

  1. I use Dr. Calderon's Tiers of vocabulary to teach vocabulary. My goal is build up the base of my students' understanding so that they may be able to use their words in a sentence and then at a discourse level. I want my students to have ownership of the vocabulary so I allow multiple opportunities for them to use their words throughout the lesson and unit. It is important to provide many supports during my instruction such as having visuals, use of their L1, and sentence starters as needed.

    1. Me, too!
I love using RIGOR because Dr. Calderon's 7 steps and using cognates are built into the lessons.

  2. When teaching vocabulary, I have been using index cards with the vocabulary word on one and the picture of the word/definition on another. Students have to match the correct photo with the word. I also have found using TPR very helpful, especially with newcomers.

  3. I try to teach key vocabulary by having students CREATE something that will make it meaningful. One activity we do is build a vocabulary board (Google Slides) and they have to use images to show me they understand the word. I am also trying to include cognates each time we do a vocabulary board activity.

  5. To teach vocabulary, I am focusing on root words and content specific words. I teach math, science, and one guided reading group. With my guided reading group I give them ten new root words every week. Every week, I add 10 more words so by the end of the year they can make a large amount of words. I also pull words out of their story that I don't think they will know. In math and science I make quizlets for the words they are expected to know after I introduce them.

  6. To teach key vocabulary, I am using visuals and cognates. The kids love using quizlet. I try to use this with each story. It gives a visual, definition, and says the word for them. Many of my students struggle with saying the word. Having students practice with a partner has helped.

  7. I am using cognates and connections between English, Spanish, Latin, and Greek to support my students in Word Within the Word vocabulary instruction. Often students are able to make a connection with the prefix, suffix, or root in their primary language, which supports their understanding of the word part in English.

    1. We also use illustrations to help the word meanings "stick".

  8. I teach key vocabulary using index cards, pictures and multiple examples of the word within text. Then throughout the unit /lesson I allow students to take ownership of the word by using the words in a sentence or sharing their connections to the word.

  9. I use context clues from the text and vocabulary slides on Connect Ed that has the word, its definition, and a sentence with each word. I have students say the word and its definition 3 times and then share with their partner a sentence or a connection with each word. I give them a sentence starter to help them with their responses. They also create vocabulary slides and I am now trying Google Draw to have students create a slide with the definition, sentence, and picture that go along with each vocabulary word.

  10. I use Multiple Meaning Maps with new vocabulary so students can understand how the same word can be used in different contexts. I also review key vocabulary that we will be using before each lesson and reiterate vocabulary words in every exercise we complete for understanding.

  11. As many have already mentioned, using visuals to help students understand more difficult vocabulary has been very helpful. For my newcomers I've had partners then translate into their native language to build the connection.

  12. When teaching vocabulary, I use pictures, video clips, gestures/acting out, plan a story with vocab words, write a story together using vocab words, turn the story into reader's theater, and have students share how they connect with vocab words.
In a couple of groups we played "I have..Who has? " in order to review vocabulary words. And I am still learning more strategies..
