SIOP Day 1 Lesson Preparation 11-8-18

Think about writing content and language objectives · Have I included language objectives for my lessons? · Could you share one that you have written? · Would you like a review of how to write language objectives?

  1. I have not formally included language objectives in my lessons. I have done them informally. I have my students repeat vocabulary words, phrases and processes to practice oral language skills. I will work on creating actual objectives within my content. "Students will say the steps of mitosis".

  2. I am an EC teacher, so I focus more on making sure my co-teachers have the vocabulary that is in the stories we will be reading is shared with the class prior to reading and we active prior knowledge as well.

  3. I am going to be teaching nutrition for science in the next couple of weeks. I can use the language objective to have students which foods have the correct characteristics for each category. They can use pictures to help identify which foods are what if they don't have the language to understand it in english. They will also have sentence starters to help them have the correct conversations about these foods and nutrition.

  4. I'm considering adapting and creating new language objectives for the research paper unit with my EL students. I think I may implement ideas from the video in order to differentiate my assignment. I want to use sentence starters and work on pulling the correct evidence from the text.

  5. As we get into the next unit of American poetry, I'm going to construct two language objectives to help students simply analyze some selections of poetry. I need to give more significant support for the writing I am asking students to do. Here is an example of what I'm thinking and will need to review/teach the words, then give time to practice and finally attempt the objective. For example - The metaphor _______________________ compares _________________ & _______________________ and is important because __________________________

  6. I will admit I have not been as diligent with constructing language objectives per se with specific attention for my language learners. However, in science when spend a great deal in learning terms that is specific to the content or subject. Science requires the introduction of vocabulary that is necessary to convey or discuss with peers. I do intend to be more conscientious of constructing more direct language objectives to better encourage my language learners in participation and understanding.

  7. I have been more cognizant of teaching content related vocabulary and paying attention to the language students need in order to be successful with a lesson; however, a review of how to write a language objective would be helpful.

  9. ESL Lesson: Writing Objective Day 2 (20 minutes)

Students will be able to write a paragraph with a minimum of five sentences about what plants or animals need to survive. They will use the visual, short passage and class brain storming chart to support their writing.

I would like another opportunity to review and practice writing objectives.
